The mystical dimension of Islam, Sufism seeks direct experience of the Divine through love, devotion, and self-annihilation (fana). Sufis pursue the inner meaning of the Quran through practices of remembrance (dhikr) and spiritual purification under the guidance of a master (shaykh).

Jewish mystical tradition exploring the hidden dimensions of Torah, the nature of God (Ein Sof — the Infinite), and the structure of divine emanation through the ten Sefirot. Kabbalah maps the relationship between the infinite God and the finite world.

The contemplative tradition within Christianity seeking direct, experiential knowledge of God. From the Desert Fathers through the medieval mystics, Christians have pursued theosis (deification) — becoming one with God through Christ while retaining individual identity.

Zen emphasizes direct insight into one's true nature (Buddha-nature) through meditation (zazen) rather than scripture or doctrine. "A special transmission outside the scriptures; not dependent on words and letters; pointing directly to the mind; seeing into one's nature and attaining Buddhahood."

The non-dual (advaita) school of Hindu philosophy teaching that Atman (the individual self) and Brahman (the ultimate reality) are identical. The world of multiplicity is maya (illusion). Liberation (moksha) comes through direct knowledge (jnana) of this identity: "Tat Tvam Asi" — "Thou Art That."

A radical spiritual path that uses the body, senses, and energy as vehicles for awakening rather than obstacles to transcend. Tantra teaches that the divine permeates all reality including the physical, and that liberation can be achieved through embracing rather than renouncing the world.

Neidan (internal alchemy) is the Taoist practice of cultivating and refining internal energies (jing, qi, shen) to achieve immortality or unity with the Tao. Rather than seeking an external God, the practitioner returns to the primordial state of undifferentiated oneness through stillness and spontaneity (wu wei).

A mystical-revivalist movement within Judaism emphasizing joyful worship, the presence of God in all things (panentheism), and the accessibility of divine experience to ordinary people — not just scholars. Hasidism democratized Kabbalistic mysticism through story, song, dance, and ecstatic prayer.

The contemplative prayer tradition of Eastern Orthodox Christianity centered on the continuous repetition of the Jesus Prayer ("Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me") to achieve inner stillness (hesychia) and the vision of divine, uncreated light — the same light seen at Christ's Transfiguration on Mount Tabor.

The Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) centers on the "Inner Light" — the direct, unmediated presence of God within every person. Quaker worship is held in silence, waiting for the Spirit to move someone to speak. No creed, no clergy, no ritual — only the living experience of the divine within.

The oldest known spiritual practice, found independently on every inhabited continent. The shaman enters altered states of consciousness through drumming, chanting, fasting, or plant medicines to journey between worlds, communicate with spirits, heal the sick, and retrieve lost souls. Shamanism is the original mystical technology.

The philosophical mysticism of Plotinus and his successors, teaching that all reality emanates from a single, transcendent source — the One (to Hen) — which is beyond being, beyond thought, and beyond description. The soul's highest purpose is henosis: return to and union with the One through contemplation.
